The City of Kirkwood is pleased to join with Missouri Botanical Garden’s Earthways Center and Shaw Nature Reserve to host this Shaw Series Salon at Kirkwood Park and Walker Lake with a focus on developing greener stormwater projects. Kirkwood Park is the most heavily used of all Kirkwood parks. The site has a large Freno modular bioretention system and rain gardens planted with native plants.

Around Walker Lake extensive use of native emergent aquatic vegetation has decreased bank erosion and opportunities for cattail encroachment and has increased wildlife diversity. Walking trails give visitors an opportunity to learn about nature or take a walk in an environmentally sustainable and safe environment. Walker Lake is a multiuse area with walking trails, fishing, etc.

Kirkwood Park has replaced the Walker Lake concrete inflow with a more attractive and natural arrangement of rockweirs, cobble and boulders planted with a diversity of native perennials, trees and shrubs. This phase was made possible by support from the Municipal Park Grant Commission of St. Louis County and the Missouri Department of Conservation.
